This San Ildefonso double-lobed polychrome canteen is from the 1860s and it’s a really amazing piece of Pueblo pottery. The canteen has the sensibility and shape of a gourd and is painted with images of clouds and plant life. It highlights how important the Pueblo’s agricultural identity was and was probably used to collect rainwater so it’s a great example of art and utility meeting somewhere in the middle and it’s currently on display at the Met.
